Get ready for SERMI: The complete guide for Auto Locksmiths
There’s been a lot of discussion online recently about SERMI, and we’ve noticed some confusion about what it actually means for auto locksmiths.
Let’s clear up the biggest myths and explain what you really need to know:
- Myth: SERMI means you can’t buy keys from 3D Group
- Fact: Not true. You can still purchase keys from us as normal. SERMI doesn’t control who can buy keys; it only affects access to vehicle manufacturers’ security systems and data, such as immobiliser programming and certain dealer-level functions.
- Myth: 3D Group is pushing or requiring SERMI
- Fact: SERMI is an industry framework agreed upon by vehicle manufacturers and authorities. It is not something created or enforced by automotive locksmith suppliers like 3D Group.
- Myth: SERMI will make locksmith tools useless
- Fact: Dealer-level programming and diagnostic tools will still work freely, and SERMI isn’t here to stop them. Security data may be affected, but not the tools themselves.
What SERMI really means for your business...
The key point is this: if your work involves accessing manufacturer security data, for example, immobiliser or key programming functions, SERMI approval may be required.
Think of SERMI as the new “digital passport” for automotive security:
- One registration gives you access to security RMI across multiple brands.
- The process includes identity checks, DBS checks, and a business audit.
- Registration takes time, so start early to avoid downtime.
Important date: 1st April isn’t just April Fool’s, it’s the SERMI go-live date. If you’re not registered, your dealer tools may stop working for security-related jobs.
How to get started:
Applications are currently open, and the process involves:
- Identity verification
- DBS checks
- Business audit
To make things easier, we’ve put together a simple SERMI guide explaining what's needed and the process:
